Tardy & Attendance Policy

AKS 2024-2025 Tardy Policy

AKS 2024-2025 Tardy Policy

School attendance is a key component to student academic success and personal growth. We at Andros Karperos School recognize the importance of attendance and have designed our tardy policy with that in mind.
Definitions:
Tardy: A student not being in their assigned seat/spot when the bell for class rings.

Excused Tardy: Valid reasons (e.g. illness, medical appointments, religious holidays, funerals) approved by administration

Unexcused Tardy: No valid reason for being late

Impacts of poor attendance on Academic Success
Learning
  • Lost class time
  • Falling behind peers academically\
  • Missing time during these foundational years can affect their high school success
Achievement
  • Poor attendance is an early predictor of High school dropout
  • High school dropouts show a difference in attendance rates from high school graduates as early as kindergarten and 1st grade.
  • High school dropouts, on average, make 60 cents for every dollar high school graduates earn
Impacts of poor attendance on Emotional/Social Well-Being
  • Student sense of belonging
  • Students miss out on activities and time with their peers when they are absent
  • These interactions are important for mental health and general well-being
Feelings about school
  • Regular attendance of elementary school students have been found to result in better feelings about school and education

In prior years, the majority of unexcused tardies have occurred during the first bell of the day as students arrive late to school in the morning. The school day begins at 8:00 AM each day but gates open at 7:30 so students can have breakfast and spend some time socializing or preparing for the day. This year, academic instruction begins right at 8:00 AM so if your child is tardy in the morning, they are missing invaluable instructional time.
As a parent/guardian you are the most influential component to getting your child to school on time in the morning. Below are some tips to avoid your child being late:

  • Make sure your child has everything that they will need for school the night before.
  • Leave earlier to avoid being late due to traffic, weather, or uncontrollable circumstances
  • Get an alarm clock for your child and teach them how to rise when it goes off.
  • Get any homework, signed papers, or lunches completed and/or prepared the night before.
  • Prepare school clothes the night before.
  • If you cannot get your child to school on time, consider having them take the bus.

We appreciate the cooperation and support in helping us maintain a positive and productive learning environment at Andros Karperos School. With your help, we can ensure our school is a place where every student can achieve!

Sincerely,
AKS Administration

At Andros Karperos school we thrive to see student attendance excel. Upon any absence we ask a parent or guardian contact the school to excuse the absence. Any uncleared absence will remain unexcused until contact is made. If your student is out more than 3 consecutive days, we request a doctor's note be provided. Any notes and attendance questions can be directed to Adriana Lizama via email or text. 530-822-4440 Ext 12107. Email: adlizama@ycusd.org.
